Preconditions to Learning

Teachers must be clear and consistent about what students are expected to do, as well as teaching them how to do it. Studies show teacher clarity is a key to student achievement. Students respond well to rules and routines for classroom activities. Teachers need to teach students how to perform the roles expected of them, and the best teachers become role-models of the behaviours required. Marzano et al. (2003); and Simonsen et al. (2008).

Teachers at FGSC follow this flowchart with all classes. Teachers use the FGSC Positive Behaviour Plan to follow up with students who demonstrate minor behaviours when setting the preconditions to learning.

To support the next class’ preconditions to learning:

Before the end of the lesson, the teacher checks the classroom is clean and the students exit quietly.
