Students should ONLY leave class after the first 30 minutes of instruction and if it is absolutely necessary.
Students should not be allowed out in pairs or groups.
If a student needs to leave your class, please:
- provide them with an 'Out of Class Pass' slip
- add a Compass Chronicle entry 'Student leaving class'
It is important that when you give a student the paper pass, you also fill in the Compass Chronicle entry 'out of class pass'. This is so it can be seen on a student Compass if they have been asking several teachers for a pass.
How to add a chronicle entry for a student
Compass > Search Student > Add Chronicle > Select Template field as General 'student Leaving class' > Click Reason > select Locker, Sick Bay, Toilet or Other > click 'Save and Close'
'Out of Class' Lanyards
Every teacher will receive an orange ‘Out of Class’ lanyard with their name on it.
If a student needs to leave class:
- Give them the lanyard
- Add an ‘Out of class’ entry to Compass Chronicle, to record the time and reason
This should only be done after 30 minutes of class time, one at a time, and if absolutely necessary. If a student arrives to class with no equipment (book, pencil case or laptop) they should not be allowed out of class to collect equipment. It is the teacher’s responsibility to follow up with the student being disorganised (log minor report – unprepared for class, and follow up with consequences > recess/lunch reflection and/or call home)
Year 9 to 12 students with an orange lanyard can go directly to the toilets (they will be unlocked after 30 minutes). Year 7 and 8 students will still collect a key as the Gym toilets will remain locked during class time.
If a student is out of class without an orange lanyard, they will receive a reflection (lunchtime for first offence and then after-school) see process below:
- If any teacher sees a student out of class, without a pass:
- Walk student back to class OR Year Level Hub.
- If the student left class without permission, the teacher who found the student logs ‘minor behaviour’ – leaving class without permission and the Year Level Hub will then issue a consequence.
- If the student leaves class with permission, however they don’t have a pass (the teacher has not followed the process) walk the student back to class.
- If any teacher sees a student out of class, with a pass:
- Ask the student to show the teacher code.
- Ask the students the reason for being out of class.
- Ask them to move quickly
- If you have concerns that the student is taking advantage of the pass, report this to the Year Level Hub for follow up.
Locking Toilets
At the end of recess/lunch, the teacher on yard duty will ensure the toilets are empty and lock the toilets. Designated staff will make their way around each toilet block and make sure toilets are locked so cleaning can take place.
Years 7/8 Gym, Years 9/10 P Block, VCE E block.
The teacher on ‘round up’ duty will unlock the toilets once the yard has cleared (after 30 minutes).
Exceptions
Students with office duty high vis, office passes, sick bay passes, morning late pass, year level hub passes, (including WB/TAB, collection of students).
