- All Fountain Gate Secondary College teachers are expected to use ICT for educational and administrative purposes. To do this, teachers will require access to a computer. All teachers employed are eligible for a laptop as part of DE’s ‘Notebooks for School Staff’ program. As per DE policy, VCE Art and Music teachers may choose to receive an Apple computer. However, other teachers are only eligible to receive a Windows computer. You may also BYOD your own device.
- Android devices such as Chromebooks are not supported by our network. Teachers may also configure mobile devices to access the internet via the College's wireless network (currently only for iPhone).
- The entire College uses a filtered internet connection; however, teachers have access to more websites than students do. If you require access to a blocked website, please contact the IT Office.
- Please do not install VPNs on school devices. If you BYOD your own device, please do not use VPN's while onsite, as you will not be able to access MS Teams and other department sites.
Passwords
Username for most ICT services is your TO Number. You will have two different passwords - your school password (same as your school laptop password), and your Education Mail/Edupay Password.
Please see the below table which can help you to know which username and password to use for which service. A little hint is whenever you see the Fountain Gate logo, it is your school email and compass password. When you see the DE logo, it is your @education.vic.gov.au email. Please make sure if you receive an email from DE that your eduPass password is going to expire that you reset it BEFORE the expiry date. If you miss this date, you will be locked out of Edupay and we have to manually reset your account.

If at any time you feel a student has seen your credentials, please see the IT Office and we can force log out of all sessions and reset your password. Most commonly, students will use teacher credentials to log in to compass to change their attendance.
Compass
The College uses Compass (http://fgsc-vic.compass.education) to:
- Track student attendance
- Track student management and wellbeing
- Communicate with parents, students and teachers
- Set assessment tasks, and provide feedback about them to students and parents
- Manage room changes and resource bookings
- Manage events (excursions, incursions, etc.)
- Share resources (curriculum documentation, forms, policies, etc.)
- Provide reports to parents
- Manage parent/teacher interviews and conferences
Instructions and guides for completing these tasks can be found in Compass:
- ‘Teaching & Learning’ menu (pencil icon)
- School Resources
- Staff Resources
- Admin – Compass Documentation
Microsoft Teams/Office 365
Microsoft Teams (and the broader Office 365 suite) is used for collaboration between students and teachers.
Although Microsoft Teams has the functionality to allow students to submit work etc., we do not use those features, as that would cause confusion between Teams/Compass. Compass is the ‘official’ tool for assessment, lesson plans, sharing resources, etc., while Teams is for collaboration.
Home Access
Most school-hosted services are available via the Internet within Australia. Compass is the starting point for accessing the following services:
- Network Drives - Via One Drive
- School Email Account
- Office 365 including Power Bi and Microsoft Teams
- When accessing Compass from home, it may require a verification code to be sent to your phone/email.
If require access while overseas, please see the IT Office for VPN access.
Student Access to Computers
All students participate in a BYOD (Bring Your Device) program and are expected to have a working computer in every class. If a student cannot afford a computer, or their computer is faulty, they can borrow a computer from their Sub School before school and return it at the end of the day. If a student does not have a working computer in your class, please give them consequences. Students must bring a fully charged device to school. We do not charge laptops or lend out chargers to students.
Students with a computer fault can seek Support from the IT Office. However, wherever possible, they should do this outside of class time. If they have a known issue with their device, we encourage them to visit the IT Office before school, during recess & lunch and after school. Many students will often use their laptops as an excuse to get out of class. Please send them to the IT office with a signed note if they require urgent assistance during class.
Students print using the ‘WebPrint’ functionality on Compass and access shared drives using the ‘Drive’ functionality.
The school has two Windows computer labs (E5 and E7), which are helpful when students need to use software that isn’t available or practical on a BYOD device (e.g. video editing). We also have specialised computer labs, including an Apple Mac lab for Art & Design and a lab of computers for music composition.
If a student misuses a computer in class, this should be treated as a classroom management issue. Students should be issued consequences based on the type of misbehaviour. As computer access is a vital tool in assisting students’ learning, we do not block computer access as a consequence of misuse (except in particular circumstances).
Resources and Equipment
All classrooms except some small-group rooms are fitted with data projectors or digital displays. Staff and students can connect to these displays via Vivi (see below).
Features of Vivi:
- The teacher can connect to the display wirelessly.
- The teacher can display videos (from ClickView etc.) while still using their computer for other tasks.
- Students can also connect to the display wirelessly (from their BYOD) and take ‘snapshots’ of the screen. These can also be annotated.
- Students’ screens can be displayed for the whole class to see.
Please note that due to copyright infringements, you are unable to stream videos from certain streaming services on VIVI. Instead, it streams a blank screen with audio. It applies to services such as Netflix, Disney, ABC and other official services. We always recommend streaming a video using Clickview as this has full VIVI integration. However, if the video you wish to play is only available via a streaming service, you will need to use an HDMI cable to connect directly to the display. Please see the IT Office if you need assistance, as not all classrooms allow this connection.
